I know it has been a super-long time since I’ve written a post, but I plan to make up for it.
So much has happened in the last few months that I just have not had the chance to sit down and blog about it!
A few days ago, I found out that I was one of the lucky few who got selected to attend the Google Teacher Academy in London in April. Attendees are dubbed “Google Certified Teachers”. I am SO excited about this–being accepted, attending, and going to London, as it will be my first time to travel to another continent. I have to say that I’ve applied for a lot of things, but this was one of the most challenging applications I’ve ever completed. There were several essay questions and a 1-minute video requirement. Here is the video I submitted:

In one of my last posts before my “hiatus” (http://blanchetblog.net/2011/10/19/quick-post-our-latest-project/), I mentioned that I was working on a video project with my students. Little did I know!!! At this point, we’ve won a state competition, been recognized by the school board, and have our video playing on television regularly (on the school board cable channel). It had been a whirlwind of excitement that no one could have anticipated. In another Coop Catalyst post (see? I HAVE been blogging!) I discussed some of the issues I had at the end of last semester. On the heels of the Logarithm video project and all the hoopla surrounding that, I was starting to feel burnt out, and I was definitely not happy with some of the things that were going on in my classroom. Luckily, I have lots of teacher-friends who supported me, and I was able to come up with a plan of attack to start the new year right. Although I feel like I have done so much learning and growing over the years, I still have a lot more learning and growing to do.
I re-wrote my course syllabus to start–including every detail of what I expected from my students in the coming semester. It really has helped, as my students knew what to expect on every level. I also allotted more time for grading papers and writing lesson plans. Spending more time to get prepared has tremendously helped in my effort to regain my sanity! My workload has definitely not decreased, but staying caught up reduces the stress of feeling perpetually behind. I know this seems like common sense, but it has taken me 7 years to figure this out!
There is lots more that has happened in the past few months that I will blogging about in the coming weeks. Of course, I still have a few more tricks up my sleeve to end the year with a bang! Pi day is coming, I’m going to London, and I have a few more projects that I want to try with my students in the next few months.
